Will Donald Trump Pick Mitt Romney to be Secretary of State?

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was one of President-elect Donald Trump's harshest critics throughout the election, but Trump is apparently willing to forgive and forget as he considers Romney for Secretary of State.

Romney met with Trump over the weekend, months after the two exchanged words that weren't consider nice.

Tufts University Political Science Professor, Jeff Berry, thinks Romney would be an excellent choice for Secretary of State because he is an expert in international economics, a respected businessman and has stature on the international stage.

"I think a lot of foreign leaders are breathing a sigh of relief when they saw the news leak this morning," Berry said on Wednesday. "They want to know, are they going to have a stable relationship with the United States."

Berry says if Romney is chosen, he will be watching, not the dynamic between Trump and Romney but between Romney and Trump’s newly tapped National Security Advisor, General Michael Flynn.

"Michael Flynn is a radical. He's an islamophobic. He's called Islam a cancer, that needs to be excised, so he's given a very negative message to the Islamic world so Romney who is more moderate is going to be in conflict immediately with Flynn," Berry said.

Trump loyalist Rudy Giuliani is said to be angling for the Secretary of State job and there is reportedly a battle on the transition team over who would be the better choice with some thinking Giuiani would be a tougher negotiator.

But many believe Romney would be a calm and stable force on the Trump team.

"Mitt Romney does not get up at 3 a.m. to tweet against his antagonists," said Berry.

Trump loyalists Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee are two who think Romney is not a good pick because Gingrich thinks Romney is not tough enough. Huckabee has said it would be an insult to Trump supporters to choose Romney after what he said about Trump.
