Willimantic Police Seek Hit-and-Run Driver

Willimantic police are searching for a driver who struck a woman and drove away.

The crash happened at about 8 p.m. on Saturday. A white Ford pickup drove off Main Street and onto the Garden Bridge Saturday evening.

The Garden Bridge is only for pedestrian traffic. Several people, including a small child, were walking at the time and many of them had to jump and dive into the weeds along the walkway to avoid getting hit, police said. The driver struck a woman and she was transported to Windham Hospital in a Willimantic Fire/Rescue ambulance to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the child wasn't injured.

The truck continued driving, striking a wooden fence and a large wooden fence post blocking an electrical box and an aluminum illumination pole. The vehicle fled down Route 32 (Whindham Road).

Police said the pickup truck was made in the late 1990s or early 2000s. The left rear tail light on the truck is damaged and so is the right front headlight and bumper.

The extent of the victim’s injuries was not immediately available.

The accident reconstruction team is investigating.

Willimantic police ask anyone who may have seen the vehicle or who knows information about the incident to contact the department. Information will be kept confidential.
