Winners Chosen in Hampton Beach Sand Sculpting Competition

There were some familiar names in the winner's circle in New Hampshire's 16th annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition.

The first place winner was five-time world champion sculptor Guy-Olivier Deveau, of Quebec, Canada, for his sculpture "Rising from the Abyss."

The second place award winner, announced Saturday, was Abe Waterman, of Prince Edward Island, with what organizers described as a "gender-bending" sculpture titled, "All Together Now."

David Andrews, of Wisconsin, took third place; Carl Jara, of Cleveland, Ohio, took fourth and Karen Fralich, of Toronto, took fifth place. Fralich won the competition last year.

The "People's Choice" Award was given to Justin Gordon, of Groveland, Massachusetts, and Deveau landed the "Scultpors' Choice" award.

The sculptors carved over three days, beginning Thursday, using 10 tons of sand each.
