Police Investigating Possible Attempted Abduction

Police in Winthrop, Massachusetts, are investigating a possible attempted abduction near Winthrop High School on Tuesday.

"I've just always felt safe but today that was shaken."

An emotional Winthrop, Massachusetts, mom who only wants to be identified as "Kathleen," describes how her 8-year-old son was the victim of a possible attempted abduction around 11:30 Tuesday morning.

She says it happened in their front yard, not far from Winthrop High School.

She says her two boys, ages 8 and 11, were playing outside with a group of their friends when they came running in the house.

"They said a man just approached us outside," she said.

Winthrop Police have released a photo of a possible suspect vehicle.

It's a four door silver or green car.

Police believe the suspicious man is about 60 years old with whitish gray hair.

Kathleen explains what the man said to the boys:

"Said to the kids 'Hey baby come here'."

"The kids all kind of looked at each other and were like 'who is he speaking to?'"

"The gentleman pointed to my Nicholas and said 'No, I'm talking to him'."

Kathleen believes the man knew the boys were frightened.

She says "as they started to come in the house, the man said 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry'."

She says he then sped away.

"The kids definitely had an instinct that something was wrong and they felt unsafe."

The Winthrop Police Chief says officers and detectives are working the case.

They're asking parents to speak to their kids about being approached by strangers.

"In my heart I would like to believe that his intent was that he was confused he was looking for someone- but then I have the frightening part of was this man trying to abduct my child? And there is nothing more frightening as a mother or father than someone wanting to hurt your child," said Kathleen.

Winthrop Police say if you have any information to call 617-846-1212.
