Woman Charged With Child Endangerment After Allegedly Overdosing on Heroin in Front of Her 4-Year-Old

A New Hampshire woman is facing a child endangerment charge after allegedly overdosing on heroin in front of her 4-year-old child on Tuesday.

Kari Houlne, 31, of Salem was arrested on one count of endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Salem District Court on Nov. 23.

Salem Police said they received a call Tuesday for a woman who was suffering an overdose. The caller initially said that the woman was not conscious and not breathing. But after Narcan was administered to her, she was reportedly alert and breathing.

Upon arrival, police discovered the occupants had vacated the room. They said there were obvious signs of alcohol consumption and drug use. An empty Narcan injector and some children's toys had been left on a windowsill in the room.

The occupants of the room were located a short distance away at a location on Stiles Road.

Houlne admitted to injecting heroin in the room with her child and a man who was with her said he administered the Narcan when it became apparent that Houlne had overdosed.

The 4-year-old child was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry for evaluation after suffering a medical emergency and later released into the custody of other family members.
