Woman Charged in Connection With Rear-Ending Police Cruiser

Police have charged a Massachusetts woman in connection with an accident authorities say injured an East Providence officer.

Police say Veronica Areias slammed into the back of the officer's sport utility vehicle cruiser while he was wrapping up an investigation into another accident on Interstate 195 east at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Responding officers allegedly saw open containers of alcohol in the back seat of the New Bedford woman's car. Areias has been charged with driving under the influence.

The officer was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released. Areias was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Areias will be arraigned on Jan. 7. A working number for her could not be found.
