Woman Charged in Fatal Car Crash Pleads Not Guilty

Police say 23-year-old Karri Benoir intended to kill herself when she crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle in Richmond on July 30

A Vermont woman charged in a fatal car crash on Interstate 89 has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and gross negligent driving resulting in a fatality.

Karri Benoir of Barre entered the pleas Monday over the phone. She is currently at a rehabilitation center in Colchester.

Police say 23-year-old Benoir intended to kill herself when she crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle in Richmond on July 30. The crash killed 30-year-old Brendon Cousino of Richmond.

Prosecutors say the state plans to file a motion to hold Benoir without bail because they worry she could be a danger to herself and others.

Her lawyer says they are "confident she is not suicidal" and that she poses no risk to public safety.

Benoir's next hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
