Woman Formally Charged in Death of Newborn Child

A grand jury returned an indictment this week charging 20-year-old Kayla Stewart of Fairfield with murder and manslaughter

A Maine woman charged in the death of her newborn son has been formally charged.

A grand jury returned an indictment this week charging 20-year-old Kayla Stewart of Fairfield with murder and manslaughter.

Police arrested Stewart on Jan. 22 after police found the remains of the baby in the garage she shared with her boyfriend, Nicholas Blood.

She contends the baby was born dead. But the medical examiner says the full-term baby was born alive, and died from asphyxiation or neglect.

Stewart is being held without bail. Blood and Stewart also have a 3-year-old daughter who is staying with relatives.

It wasn't immediately known if she had a lawyer.
