Woman Killed in Crash With School Van in Whitman, Massachusetts

Francine Laterza, 61, was taken to Brockton Hospital, where she was pronounced dead

A woman was killed Thursday in a crash with a wheelchair transport van in Whitman, Massachusetts.

"The bang was extremely loud," said neighbor Phyllis Ashton. "I had thought something had hit the house."

Outside her home, just before 4 p.m., Ashton saw the van and a Nissan sedan that had crashed. She says the van was transporting disabled students. Inside the car, she said, were two women.

The Plymouth County District Attorney's Office confirms a passenger in the sedan, Francine Laterza, 61, was taken to Brockton Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just after 4:30 p.m.

The driver of that car was taken to South Shore Hospital with serious injuries. The driver and two passengers of the van suffered minor injuries and were taken to Brockton Hospital.

Police say initial investigation shows the Nissan crossed the center line and struck the van.

Investigators were on scene for hours after the crash, and during that time, Route 14 was closed off to traffic.

The accident remains under investigation.
