Woman Who Jumped With Twins in Psychiatric Ward

Patina Welch of Lyman told investigators there were men with guns in her house trying to kill her son and daughter last summer and she was trying to save them

A New Hampshire woman accused of jumping out a second-story window with her 4-month-old twins, killing one and severely injuring the other, has been committed to the state's psychiatric ward.

Patina Welch of Lyman told investigators there were men with guns in her house trying to kill her son and daughter last summer and she was trying to save them. When she jumped, she landed on top of her son, who died. His twin sister is recovering.

The 29-year-old Welch pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

The Caledonian Record reports
Welch was committed Wednesday to a five-year term at the psychiatric unit.

A psychiatrist's report concluded Welch has schizo-affective, post-traumatic stress and borderline personality disorders.
