Airport Receives 6M Grant for Runway Expansion Project

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Airport Corporation has received $6 million in federal grant money to continue work on expanding a runway at T.F. Green Airport.

Sen. Jack Reed, Mayor Scott Avedisian, and Warwick officials announced the new funding from the Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday.

The grant will pay for relocation of recreational ball fields at Winslow Park to new site near the airport.

The FAA has approved plans to extend the airport's primary runway to the south by about 1,500 feet to make its total length 8,700 feet. The expansion will allow T.F. Green to accommodate larger planes for West Coast and international flights.

The relocation project will include building new softball and soccer fields, walking trails and a concession stand. It is expected to be completed in June 2015.
