Community Helps Renovate Home of Boy Confined to Wheelchair

(NECN: Nicole Jacobs) - Sam Paster thinks like any other 16-year-old boy. He loves sports, particularly skiing and basketball.

But there is one thing that sets him apart: he is confined to a wheelchair.

Sam was born 25 weeks early and diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 11 months old. As he has gotten older, he says one of the biggest challenges is getting around his family's Swampscott, Mass. home in his motorized chair.

After losing more than $85,000 to a contractor that began home renovations for the family, but walked away without completing them, was left to start over in creating a comfortable home environment for their son.

Brait Builders Corporation heard about Sam's story and stepped in to help. With their assistance and the assistance of dozens of other volunteers, the Paster's will have a newly renovated home in just a matter of days at no cost to them.

"They said, 'no we don't want to just finish the project ... we want to make this a home for Sam,'" said Sam's father, Glenn Paster.

Brothers Bob and Michael Brait say they did not think twice about helping the Paster's; they call it a no-brainer.

As for Sam, he says this new home is life-changing for him. It gives him independence, which is something he has always wanted.
