Mass. Man Charged in Charity Scam

(NECN: Katie Daly) - A Southbridge man is facing some serious charges, for an alleged fundraising scam. Authorities say Jeffrey Trifone asked area businesses to donate to a charity for cancer research that didn't exist, and then pocketed the money.

Trifone pleaded not guilty to two counts of larceny under 250 dollars by false pretense. After leaving the courtroom, Trifone told us he was sorry for what he did.

According to Police, Trifone said he was raising money for a softball tournament that would help raise money for Relay For Life. They say he was looking for pledges of 40 dollars.

Police do not think this was an isolated incident. They say they have reason to believe more businesses owners were scammed and are launching a bigger investigation.
