Religious Figures Stolen From Quincy, Mass. Nativity Scene

(UPDATE: 12/6 7:55 AM) - Jesus, Mary and Jospeh were all found in good condition around 7:00 AM. on Furnance Street Friday morning. However, the lamb is still missing. The Quincy Police Chief says there may be a surveillance tape.

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Quincy, Mass.) - Quincy, Mass. is all decked out for the holidays – from a giant Santa and snowman sparkling up the square to a nearly life-sized nativity scene.

But overnight, someone stole some of the most important figures from the creche, including Baby Jesus.

"They found that there were several pieces missing from the nativity scene and there was one actually still on the sidewalk, one of the shepherds had been dragged across the sidewalk," said Quincy Police Lt. Jack Sullivan. "Jesus, Mary and Joseph were missing and a small lamb was also missing."

Police say Baby Jesus has been stolen at least twice before, but he’s always been found - located in a canal in 2004 and in a cemetery after he went missing last year.

“It seems to be almost that some people think it’s a prank, a Halloween prank, so it does reoccur at this time of year but people take it a lot more seriously,” said Lt. Sullivan.

The community is taking the theft very seriously, calling on whomever did this to bring the figures back.

“Return it, just stop stealing it, it’s pointless because sooner or later they’re just going to stop putting this up,” said Quincy resident Kelsey Fair.

"Man get a heart, get a heart," said Lewis Richards, also of Quincy. "This is crazy, this is – last year was a joke I thought but this is serious now because it’s affected people’s holidays."

“It’s not a prank, it’s a theft,” said Quincy resident Fran Wyckoff.

And while Quincy Police say because of the value of the figures the thief could be charged with felony larceny, that’s not their goal.

“We’d certainly want them to return the items, if they called us, told us where we could find them, arranged to get them, that’s our main concern rather than to prosecute, we’d like to at least get the items back as soon as possible,” Lt. Sullivan said.
