Uxbridge, Mass. Woman Charged in Hit-and-run That Injured 10-year-old Boy

(NECN: Mike Cronin) - An Uxbridge, Mass. woman was taken into custody following her arraignment Wednesday. Gina Amore is charged in hit and run that left a 10-year-old boy injured.

“And if I'm out there, be a grown up and be a responsible driver and stop,” says crosswalk guard Kelly Shea.

It happened Tuesday morning as students and parents were crossing Pleasant Street, on their way to school at Midland Street Elementary. Shea says the boy was in the crosswalk with his mom and others when Amore hit him.

“He got hit right, closer to here on the center yellow line and he landed about 15 feet up the street.”

The boy was taken to the hospital but Shea says he was ok. She called 911 and says Amore left the scene.

“I don't kind of remember what was going through my head at the time. Like stop lady. You hit a kid and when she took off I was mortified.”

Police caught up with Amore later thanks in part to eyewitnesses. She's facing a number of charges, but her father says her rights were violated.

“The Miranda was not there. She was not at the place at that time. I'm here to defend my daughter all the way,” says Joe Amore.

Amore is held on $2,500 cash bail. Her attorney says at this point the charges are just allegations.

“She's presumed innocent of the charges and I'd like to further investigate by looking at some police reports and seeing what the evidence is before I can comment really on anything,” says defense attorney Tom Vukmirovits.

Worcester school safety liaison Rob Pezzella says Amore had plenty of time to see Shea and other people in the crosswalk. He says motorists need to be aware of their surroundings.

“This crossing guard in particular was out in the middle of the crosswalk. She clearly had her vest on and her sign up. And unfortunately, a very negligent motorist which we have in a lot of cases did not pay attention.”

“When you have an accident,” Shea says, “and it doesn't matter what's going on, you just have to pull over.”
