A New Hampshire State Police trooper was injured when his cruiser was hit by another car on Interstate 93 on Wednesday morning.

According to state police, around 10:14 a.m. Wednesday, a white Kia sedan driven by John Elliott Sparling, 61, of Thornton, New Hampshire, hit a state police cruiser that was in the breakdown lane on I-93 north in New Hampton making a motor vehicle stop.

The cruiser, which had its blue emergency lights activated, sustained heavy damage. The vehicle was occupied at the time of the crash by state police Staff Sgt. David McCormack, assistant troop commander of the Troop E barracks in Tamworth. He suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth for observation.

Sparling's vehicle also sustained heavy damage, but he was not injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
