Connolly Wants to Give Boston New Energy, Ideas, Resolve

(NECN: John Moroney, Boston) - Will there be a new mayor in office in Boston for the first time in decades? That's what City Councilor John Connolly is hoping. He announced his candidacy for the post on Tuesday, launching an effort to unseat Tom Menino.

John Connolly wants to be the next mayor of Boston, saying at the kick-off for his campaign Tuesday morning that he's looking to give the state's capital city new energy, new ideas and new resolve.

The 39-year-old city councilor and his wife Meg have two children in Boston public schools. He's a former teacher who says transforming the city's education system will be the cornerstone of his campaign.

Tom Menino has yet to indicate if he will seek a sixth term. Connolly is the first major candidate to say he will take on the powerful incumbent, who has been dealing with issue related to his health in recent months.

UMass political professor Paul Wantanabe says Connolly's success is ultimately tied to the man he wants to replace.

Connolly did not criticize the 71-year-old Menino directly. He said the Mayor is a good man and his love for the city is unquestionable. Still, Connolly said his decision to run is about the future.
