Boston Globe Endorses Charlie Baker

One day before NECN hosts a debate between the Republican and Democrat Martha Coakley, and nine days before the general election, Boston's most wideley circulated newspaper has chosen a candidate.

Republican Charlie Baker gained a significant new supporter Sunday when the Boston Globe officially endorsed the Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate.

The publication chose the Republican just one day before NECN hosts a debate between Baker and Democrat Martha Coakley.

Just days earlier, a poll in the Boston Globe had Baker ahead by nine points, leading Coakley by a margin of 45 percent to 36 percent.

"Baker splits from the national Republican Party on social issues such as abortion rights and same-sex marriage," wrote the paper's editorial board. "One needn't agree with every last one of Baker's views to conclude that, at this time, the Republican nominee would provide the best counterpoint to the instincts of an overwhelmingly Democratic Legislature. His candidacy opens up the possibility of creative tension. Facing veto-proof Democratic majorities in both houses, Baker would have no choice but to work constructively with the Legislature. Likewise, the legislature would have to engage with Baker's initiatives."

Sunday, supporters of Coakley rallied in Lynn while Baker visited small businesses in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood.

You can watch the candidates debate the issues in Worcester on NECN and on www.necn.com Monday at 8 p.m.
