Sen. Elizabeth Warren is continuing to criticize President Donald Trump's abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey.

President Donald Trump has often been a familiar target of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and now she has new material — the sudden dismissal of FBI Director James Comey in the middle of the Russia investigation.

"Nixon also tried to fire the people who were investigating him, but in many ways, this is far worse, because in Nixon's case, it was only about campaign illegalities," Warren told NBC Boston at a town hall in Ware. "Here, we're talking about involvement with a hostile foreign government."

In the wake of the uproar over Comey's surprising termination, President Trump tweeted Friday, "James Comey better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

Warren says she's not sure if the president really recorded those talks.

"I have no idea, but the very fact that Donald Trump seems to be trying to threaten, now, the former head of the FBI, I am very disturbed about this," she said.

In the daily briefing Friday, the president's press secretary, Sean Spicer, did not deny that there may be tapes.

"If there are recordings, if Donald Trump is suggesting there are recordings of his conversations with James Comey, then he should reveal them right now," said Warren.

Warren says now that Comey's out, there needs to be a special prosecutor to get to the bottom of the Russia investigation. She says there may be something criminal there, or nothing at all, but it needs to be resolved.
