Hassan Takes Democratic Primary for NH Governor

First-term incumbent New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan has easily dispatched two opponents to win the Democratic party's nomination for governor

First-term incumbent New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan has easily dispatched two opponents to win the Democratic party's nomination for governor.

Hassan defeated Ian Freeman and Clecia Terrio in Tuesday's primary as she gears up for a second run.

Hassan so far has been stressing her ability to work across party lines to pass a state budget, expand Medicaid and change the way mental health care is provided in the state.

It's rare for a first-term governor to be ousted in New Hampshire: It's only happened twice since 1953.

Her opponent in November will be either Walt Havenstein or Andrew Hemingway, who were competing in the Republican primary. With 11 percent of precincts reporting, Havenstein was leading Hemingway 57 percent to 37 percent.
