Maine Sens. Differ on Border Crisis Blame After Trip

Republican Susan Collins and independent Angus King visited Mexican border

Maine's two U.S. senators, just back from a tour of the Mexican border, differ over where the blame lies for the crisis involving thousands of Central American youngsters entering the United States.

Sen. Susan Collins tells the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1kd0GPM ) President Barack Obama bears some blame because he hasn't been forceful enough in countering the perception that the children will be allowed to stay in the U.S. The Republican lawmaker also says Obama has been taking a piecemeal approach.

Sen. Angus King, an independent, agrees Obama could have sent a stronger message that the children wouldn't be allowed to stay, but he says Obama isn't solely to blame.

Friday's border visit came as the U.S. House approved two immigration-related bills. The Senate won't take them up until next month.
