Small Amounts of Marijuana Legalized in South Portland, Maine

The city has voted to legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes for people 21 or older.

Voters in South Portland have voted to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Ballot initiatives in South Portland and Lewiston call for the cities to allow adults ages 21 and older to possess an ounce of marijuana without facing any penalty. South Portland voters approved the measure Tuesday. Voters in Lewiston shot down the initiative.

Portland voters overwhelmingly approved a similar law there last year.

Marijuana Policy Project Maine Director David Boyer says he hopes the ballot initiatives build support before a possible 2016 statewide initiative.

Law enforcement officials say marijuana possession remains illegal throughout Maine under state law, rendering the initiatives meaningless.
