Tierney on the Defense for Mass.' 6th District

In two weeks, voters will decide a contest of four Democrats vying to serve in Congress from Massachusetts' 6th District.

The incumbent, Rep. John Tierney of Salem, has served nine terms and eked out a win against Republican Richard Tisei in 2012. Last week, two of his Democratic challengers, Seth Moulton and Marissa DeFranco, joined Broadside to talk about their bid. Moulton says he doesn't differ from Tierney that much on the issues, but argues the incumbent is one of Congress' least effective members. Naturally, Tierney disagreed.

"He's wrong because we passed a lot of legislation, but also every piece of legislation doesn't have your name on it. I think we like to work collaboratively," he said, then pointing to legislation he helped to pass.

Tierney, who serves on the National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations Committee, where he is a ranking member, says President Obama needs to address Congress about ISIS and Iraq.

"I have every feeling that if he had come, Congress probably would have supported his humanitarian that he took ... in that area, and they may do more on that basis, but I think it's incumbent on the president and the White House and the defense department to explain to Congress exactly what the strategy is," he said.

Tierney also talks about the latest in the Market Basket saga, the execution of New Hampshire-native journalist James Foley, immigration and more.
