Troopers Back Hassan, Havenstein Takes Tax Pledge

GOP NH Gov. candidate promised to veto income tax or general sales tax while state police endorsed the Democratic incumbent

Republican gubernatorial candidate Walt Havenstein has taken New Hampshire's traditional anti-tax pledge, while incumbent Democrat Maggie Hassan has picked up the endorsement of state troopers.

For decades, New Hampshire governors and candidates have promised to veto a personal income or general sales tax. Havenstein signed the pledge Monday in Concord and added a second piece: He promised not to commit to any unfunded spending obligations that would put taxpayers on the hook down the road.

Meanwhile, Hassan's opposition to both a sales and income tax is one of the reasons she's being endorsed by the New Hampshire Troopers' Association. The group says Hassan's budget protected critical investments in public safety, higher education and economic development without such taxes.
