Broadside: Boys, Men and Newtown

(NECN) - Vice President Joe Biden says the Obama administration is "absolutely committed" to curbing gun violence in the United States.

Thursday, Biden met with law enforcement leaders to discuss a way forward in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.

Biden is a longtime gun control advocate, and is overseeing the White House's response to Friday's killing of 20 schoolchildren, six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the shooter's mother.

Dr. William Pollack has lots of experience studying the issues that trouble boys and young men. Dr. Pollack practices at Cambridge Health Alliance and is associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pollack is also the author of several books, most notably "Real Boys' Voices" and "Real Boys: Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood."

"Our adolescent boys are in big trouble. We socialize them in the 21st century that big boys don't cry, don't share your pain, stand stoically, stand on your own, girls can show their feelings, boys can't, and what happens when they're in pain? They don't reach out, they don't ask for help, and if a friend of theirs sees that they're in pain, it's still snitching to go to someone and say 'help this guy out, he's got a problem,'" Dr. Pollack says.
