DC Dialogue: Boston Summer Tourism

Getting geared up for summer is hard work in the region’s vital travel and tourism season.

NECN got some insight on what to expect from Boston’s summer tourism season through the eyes of the man who runs The Boston Harbor Hotel, Stephen Johnston.

In 2013, Boston hotels had a record occupancy rate of 80 percent, bringing in $1.2 billion in revenue.

Johnston says they are looking forward to the summer because they believe it should be one of the best seasons they’ll have since the recession.

He continued by discussing how MASSPORT has added many more international flights to Logan Airport, which is helping to increase Boston hotel revenue.

“We, in our business and in our industry, we’re always watching our prices. We’re keenly aware of what we’re charging, what other cities charge for the same kinds of services and product. In fact, it doesn’t just hold true to hotels. It’s the same with our restaurants and shopping and car rental and all of that, as well. It’s hugely important,” Johnston explained.

Johnston also discussed the possibility of expanding the Boston Convention Center.
