DC Dialogue: Why Are New England Jobless Figures Low?

The unemployment rates in each New England state run the gamut from the worst in the nation at a full three points below the national average.

Jim Brett, New England Council CEO and John Hailer, Natixis Global Asset Management CEO discussed the reasoning for this.

Brett said that Massachusetts is likely doing better than other states because of the diverse economy.

“It’s almost like an urban center revival of the economies around the world,” Hailer added. “You look at the US and you see Washington DC or New York or Boston doing great, but then you go outside that area and it’s much more difficult.”

"Those other areas-we have to find ways of creating jobs there," Brett said.

In addition, Brett and Hailer talk about how trade missions and casinos may or may not address the problems.
