Big Papi is getting ready to say goodbye to baseball.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will retire after the 2016 season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

Ortiz is a nine-time All-Star, a three-time World Series champion and he holds the Red Sox single-season record for home runs.

On Jan. 22, 2003, Ortiz signed a free agent contract with the Red Sox.

Ortiz has been a fan favorite in New England since his start with the team.

"People love Big Papi, even if someone knows nothing about the Red Sox they've heard of David Ortiz," says Theo Matt, a manager at the Red Sox Team store.

Based on the reaction of Mets Fan Rich Rivera, Matt is right. "Oh man the guy can hit the ball, clutch in World Series playoffs we definitely could have used him this year against the Royals that's for sure," says Matt.

Right now there's nothing public from Big Papi himself.

The Red Sox organization tells us they'll only comment if and when he makes an announcement.
