8 Sets of Human Remains Found Near Town Hall

Eight sets of human remains have been dug up near Cornish Town Hall in Maine, and authorities say even more may be discovered

Construction crews working in Cornish, Maine, made a rather gruesome discovery this week as they attempted to install a drainage pipe.

They dug up eight sets of human remains behind the town hall. All of the remains have been brought to the medical examiner's office where an anthropologist will examine them.

Based on old records and historical photos, the town believes the bodies were part of a cemetery that was supposed to be moved to make way for a new town hall.

"The headstones were moved back in the 1920"s to the Riverside Cemetery, beyond that this is a surprise to everybody," said town selectman Dan Sherman.

The gravestones are in the nearby cemetery, but it now appears the bodies weren't moved with them. The town is discussing plans to provide a proper burial for the remains.
