Cop Shoots Carjacking Suspect in Buttocks

An off-duty deputy police chief in north Florida says he shot a 15-year-old boy in the buttocks after being pistol-whipped during an attempted carjacking.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says University of North Florida Deputy Police Chief Bill Strudel was attacked at around 9 p.m. Monday night.

Strudel was running errands and had stopped to buy ice from an ice machine when he was approached by a group. A teenager pointed a gun at Strudel's face and demanded his SUV.

Strudel told authorities he swatted the gun away before taking a blow to the head. He grabbed his pistol from a fanny pack and fired several shots, hitting the suspect's buttocks.

The suspect was treated and arrested.

The Florida Times-Union reports that Strudel needed numerous stitches to his head.
