JAY CARR
NECN film critic Jay Carr was born in New York City and grew up in a family that read seven newspapers each day. Although he has spent most of his career working for print media, he has been with NECN since its inception. A CCNY graduate, he wrote his first reviews at The New York Post, went to The Detroit News in 1964, and joined the Boston Globe in 1983, remaining until 2002. In 1995, he was named to the Library of Congress' National Film Preservation Board. Carr has won the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism, awarded by the English department chairmen of Princeton, Yale and Cornell Universities under the terms of the late critic's will. In 1989, he was named Chevalier, Ordre des Arts et Lettres (France) for writings on French film. He edited and wrote six essays for the National Society of Film Critics anthology, The A-List (Da Capo Press, 2002), which he edited. He still has not grown used to putting on makeup to go to work, and would rather watch Hairspray than use it.
