Homeless vets receive assistance

(NECN/WMTW: Augusta, Maine) - Homeless veterans received some assistance on Saturday at the Togus VA Medical Center.

The center hosted its 12th annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down event, in which around 60 homeless vets were bused to the center. They were treated to hair cuts and massages.

They were also given medical exams and information about employment and how to apply for food stamps.

Woman survives fall onto North Station tracks

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Boston, Mass.) - It was a close call and a harrowing experience for a group of people who watched a woman fall on the tracks at Boston's North Station and a train approach.

One witness said he "saw a woman come an inch away from death."

But she didn't die, thanks to some quick thinking.

A near miss, an almost was, a could have, likely would have been tragedy was avoided Friday night - thanks to the quick thinking of an Orange line driver and frantic passengers waiting on the platform at North Station, who helped get the driver to stop.

Capt. Jones, a 'true American patriot', laid to rest

(NECN: Tom Langford, Falmouth, Mass.) - With soulful songs and solemn prayers, more than 300 mourners gathered on Saturday in a Falmouth, Massachusetts church to say goodbye to Marine Captain Eric Jones.

His best friend, Michael Warshaw, remembers Jones as a gentleman, quick with a joke and quick to help others.

He said, with a degree from Northeastern University, Jones could have had a career in finance.

But instead, the attacks of September 11th solidified his decision to join the military.

Health care debate alive in N.H.

(NECN: John Moroney, N.H.) - The debate over health care reform was a live one in New England on Saturday.

Those in favor of reform rallied in Concord, New Hampshire on Saturday, while those opposed gathered in Manchester.

The Concord rally was organized by the Democratic National Committee. The party in power is pushing a $1 trillion plan to expand health care coverage through a government-run health insurance program. Plus, it would stop insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.

Fallen Marine laid to rest on Cape

(NECN: Tom Langford, Falmouth, MA) - On Saturday, a fallen Marine returns to his final resting place.

Captain Eric Jones died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on October 26th.

It was the same crash that killed Massachusetts resident, Captain Kyle Van De Giesen.

He was part of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169.

The 29-year-old Jones grew up in Pound Ridge, N.Y., but spent his summers on the Cape.

Captain Jones was a 2004 graduate of Northeastern University.

Person killed by commuter rail train in Franklin, MA

(NECN: Franklin, MA) - A MBTA Spokesman has confirmed to NECN that a male in his mid 40s was struck and killed by an outbound Franklin Line Commuter Rail Trail.

The person was hit in Franklin at the Fisher Street MBTA Crossing.

Busses are being shuttled between Franklin and Forge Park Stations.

Vt. state Sen. Maynard to resign

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state Sen. Hull Maynard says he plans to resign from his seat midterm to spend more time with his family.

The 75-year-old Rutland County Republican was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and is a member of the Finance and Transportation committees. He says he has four grandchildren that he wants to spend more time with, noting that he's never seen them ski because he's always too tired when he gets home to Shrewsbury on the weekends.

Vermont ski area opens Saturday

KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Killington Resort is getting an early jump on winter.

The Vermont ski area plans to open Saturday for the weekend.

At least four trails served by two lifts will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. No easy terrain will be available.

Killington plans to reopen again next weekend, weather permitting.

Early season lift ticks are $49 for adults and $39 for juniors.

Three-alarm fire burning in Lawrence, Mass.

(NECN: Lawrence, Mass.) - The Lawrence Fire Department confirms a three-alarm fire at 9 South Canal Street.

There are no injuries reported at this time.

The address of the building is listed the Merrimac Paper Company.

Fire crews expect the fire to burn for quite some time.

NH couple strikes jackpot twice

(NECN: Scot Yount, Nashua, NH) - A little lottery luck for a New Hampshire couple. They've hit a million-plus dollar jackpot not once, but twice since 2005.

So what makes them so lucky?

This is the story of lightning striking twice. Call it incredible ginormous luck. Bob and Diane Jaracz of Nashua, New Hampshire are what you might call lucky.

Bob was a Navy pilot, shot down over Korea, he escaped a POW camp and made it home. Pretty lucky.

He married Diane and raised three boys and now have their grandchildren. Pretty lucky
