Army: Hasan taken off ventilator, in ICU

(NECN: Fort Hood, Texas) - The lone suspect in the shooting spree at Fort Hood was taken off a ventilator, according to Col. John Rossi.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan remained in intensive care at a military hospital.

Col. Rossi said on Saturday night that he is unsure if Maj. Hasan was able to communicate.

Maj. Hasan was shot during an exchange of gunfire during Thursday's attack. Army officials had previously said he was "not able to converse."

Rep. Shadegg speaks for Baby Maddie in health care debate

(NECN: Washington, D.C.) - As member of the House debated the health care reform bill on Saturday, one Congressman used an unique approach in opposition of the bill's passage.

Holding a baby, Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) spoke for her, saying that she does not want government-run health care.

"This is Maddie. Maddie likes America because we have freedom here and Maddie believes in patient choice health care. She has come here to say she doesn't want government to take over health care. She wants to keep her plan," Rep. Shadegg said.

Woman survives fall onto North Station tracks

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Boston, Mass.) - It was a close call and a harrowing experience for a group of people who watched a woman fall on the tracks at Boston's North Station and a train approach.

One witness said he "saw a woman come an inch away from death."

But she didn't die, thanks to some quick thinking.

A near miss, an almost was, a could have, likely would have been tragedy was avoided Friday night - thanks to the quick thinking of an Orange line driver and frantic passengers waiting on the platform at North Station, who helped get the driver to stop.

Capt. Jones, a 'true American patriot', laid to rest

(NECN: Tom Langford, Falmouth, Mass.) - With soulful songs and solemn prayers, more than 300 mourners gathered on Saturday in a Falmouth, Massachusetts church to say goodbye to Marine Captain Eric Jones.

His best friend, Michael Warshaw, remembers Jones as a gentleman, quick with a joke and quick to help others.

He said, with a degree from Northeastern University, Jones could have had a career in finance.

But instead, the attacks of September 11th solidified his decision to join the military.

13 Fort Hood victims ID'd, moment of silence held

(NECN: Fort Hood) - The thirteen victims killed in the Fort Hood shooting were identified on Saturday evening by Colonel John Rossi, the Deputy Commanding General for Fort Hood.

In identifying the victims, Col. Rossi offered his condolences to their families and friends.

Mass. officials push $9M footbridge for Kraft lots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The Patrick administration plans to use $9 million in stimulus funds for a Foxborough footbridge connecting two parking lots that belong to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

The footbridge would cross Route 1 near Gillette Stadium and Kraft's Patriot Place retail development.

Kraft is tied for number 468 on Forbes Magazine's list of the world's billionaires. The Boston Globe reports that state officials bypassed various projects - including roadwork in Canton, Danvers, Braintree and Bellingham - in favor of the footbridge.

Gov. Perry visits Fort Hood victims

(NECN: Temple, Texas) - Texas Governor Rick Perry visited wounded victims of the Fort Hood shooting on Saturday, saying that those soldiers said it was an honor to serve their country and are committed to returning to service.

"We talked about these kids' families, we talked about if they needed anything," Gov. Perry said. "We comforted them and loved on them, and I think that's the appropriate role at this particular point in time."

The governor said that hold told the soldiers, "there's 24 million Texans praying for them and wishing them well."

Made with WTC steel, USS New York commissioned

(NECN: New York, N.Y.) - The Navy commissioned its newest assault ship, the USS New York, in ceremonies at a pier in New York City.

The New York was built with tons of steel from the World Trade Center.

The ship was decked in red, white and blue bunting for the occasion, which started with a moment of silence for those whose lives were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

The $1 billion warship was built near New Orleans by workers who survived Hurricane Katrina.

President says now is time for Congress to "answer the call of history"

(NECN) - On Saturday, President Barack Obama visited Capital Hill to help show his support for Democrats.

His visit comes as the House was debating a bill on health care legislation.

After the meeting he spoke at the White House about how "now's the time to finish the job on health care overhaul."

He stated that "This is our moment to deliver on health care overhaul" and urged the House to `answer the call of history and pass health care bill.

If the Democrats are successful in passing the bill, it would give President Obama his biggest victory since last year's election.

Fallen Marine laid to rest on Cape

(NECN: Tom Langford, Falmouth, MA) - On Saturday, a fallen Marine returns to his final resting place.

Captain Eric Jones died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on October 26th.

It was the same crash that killed Massachusetts resident, Captain Kyle Van De Giesen.

He was part of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169.

The 29-year-old Jones grew up in Pound Ridge, N.Y., but spent his summers on the Cape.

Captain Jones was a 2004 graduate of Northeastern University.
