Stronger dollar, weak economic data pummels stocks

NEW YORK (AP) - Signs of a subdued economic recovery sent investors out of stocks Thursday and in search of safer assets like the dollar.

Major indexes tumbled about 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which lost 94 points but ended well off its low. Energy and material stocks logged some of the biggest losses as a jump in the dollar sent commodity prices tumbling. Meanwhile, an analyst's downgrade of the chip industry pulled technology shares sharply lower.

(NECN) - With six weeks remaining in 2009, doesn't the Massachusetts legislature still have work to do? There's no doubt in Governor Patrick's mind. He's still steaming 24 hours after the House gaveled its session to a close.

Patrick is calling on legislators to come back into formal session to pass key pieces of legislature. Thursday, he faulted lawmakers for ending the year's session without acting on the bills.

Fifth man charged in deadly home invasion in Mont Vernon, NH

(NECN: Lauren Collins, Manchester, NH) - Entering a Nashua, New Hampshire courtroom, Autumn Savoy mouthed to his mother, "I love you, get me out."

It was the second arraignment in as many days for the 20-year-old Hollis man, who faces three charges in connection with the October 4th attack that left Kimberly Cates dead and her daughter Jamie severely injured.

18-year-old Stephen Spader and 20-year-old Christopher Gribble, both of Brookline, face murder charges.

Boy struck by racing car in Lowell, Mass.; police seek help in identifying driver

(NECN: Brad Puffer, Lowell, Mass.) - A 12-year-old boy who just yesterday was walking down the street now lies in a hospital bed this afternoon. Police say that boy was thrown from a Lowell, Massachusetts, crosswalk when one of two racing cars hit him, and then took off.

Detectives are now appealing for help in identifying the drivers.

12 year old Kelvin Savanhmixay is badly injured but getting better after he was struck , in a crosswalk, by a hit and run driver who allegedly raced through a red light.

Senate committee looks at threat of homegrown terrorism

(NECN: Washington) - The Senate Homeland Security committee opened hearings today, to try to determine the cause of the Fort Hood shootings. Major Nidal Hasan is accused of killing 13, and wounding more than thirty others at that Texas military post on November 5th.

Retired Army General John Keane told the committee that the military had no manual for dealing with actions taken by someone like Major Hasan.

Committee Chairman Joseph Lieberman said corrective actions is needed in this area.

FAA: Failed computers that delayed flights working again

(NECN/ABC) - If you tried to get anywhere by air this morning, chances are you didn't make it on time. Computer problems at the Federal Aviation Administration threw off air travel nationwide. The FAA says they are back in action now, but the flight delays will likely take hours to clear up.

The problem started early this morning, shortly after 5:00 a.m. The glitch impacted mostly flight plans, but also traffic management.

During the outage, dispatchers had to send flight plans to controllers, who then had to manually enter them into computers.

Man shot during basketball game at Boston elementary school

(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - Police have beefed up security in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood following a gang-related shooting inside an elementary school gym. It happened during a pickup basketball game for kids at the Marshall Elementary School.

A 22-year-old was shot in the arm and leg as he and the shooter ran from the building. Police say the victim, whose injuries are non-life-threatening, has not cooperated with investigators.

Fifth man arrested in Mont Vernon, NH, burglary, murder

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Nashua, NH) - 20-year-old Autumn Savoy of Hollis, New Hampshire was reportedly crying in court Wednesday when he was charged with hindering the apprehension and prosecution of a suspect and conspiracy.

He also reportedly told the judge, "I was scared."

Savoy is now the fifth person charged in connection with the machete attack and murder of 42-year-old nurse Kimberly Cates and the attempted murder of her eleven-year-old daughter Jaimie in their Mont Vernon, New Hampshire home last month.

Boy hit by drag racing car in Lowell, Mass.

(NECN: Lowell, Mass.) - The search is on for a hit and run driver in Lowell, Massachusetts. Police say someone drag racing hit a 12-year-old boy, then took off.

Witnesses say one of the two cars that was racing hit the boy in a crosswalk along the VFW Parkway.

The boy was thrown 20 feet in the air, and is in serious condition at a Boston hospital.

The car that hit the boy is described as a blue Mazda, Honda or Mitsubishi.

Police say it likely has damage to the bumper, hood and windshield.

FAA computer problem causes widespread delays

ATLANTA (AP) - Widespread flight cancellations and delays nationwide because of a problem with the FAA system that collects airlines' flight plans.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says she doesn't know how many flights are being affected or when the problem will be resolved.

An AirTran Airways spokesman says Thursday there's no danger to flights in the air, and flights are still taking off and landing.

However, spokesman Christopher White says flight plans are having to be inputted manually because of a malfunction with the automated system.
