Karzai sworn-in; Clinton presses 'accountability'

(NECN/ABC) - It was an historic day in Afghanistan, as Hamid Karzi was inaugurated for his second five-year term as president.

But the Afghan leader also got a stern warning from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The inauguration ceremony brings to an end the tumultuous election process, which has been mired in fraud and controversy.

Now, all eyes are on Karzai to see if he will live up to his promises of stamping down on corruption.

N.H. panel approves Mega Millions

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire Lottery Commission has approved the sale of Mega Millions tickets.

The panel on Wednesday unanimously voted to add the multistate lottery game.

Lottery officials say in the past states could sell Powerball or Mega Millions but not both. Now states are left to decide whether to sell them both.

Officials hope to have the new game available in New Hampshire by the end of January.

The largest Mega Million jackpot was $370 million in March 2007.

Savoy charged with covering up Mont Vernon attack

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Nashua, N.H.) - A fifth Granite State man on Wednesday was charged in connection with the home invasion murder of a Mont Vernon mother

Autumn Savoy, 20, faces two counts of hindering apprehension or prosecution and one count of conspiracy to hinder apprehension or prosecution in Mont Vernon case.

While Savoy was arraigned in Milford District Court on one of the counts, his arraignment on the other needs to be completed in Nashua. He is accused of committing the alleged crimes in two different geographic areas.

Overhaul planned for 14 Boston schools

(NECN: John Moroney, Boston, Mass.) - More than a dozen Boston schools could be closed under a plan proposed by Superintendent Carol Johnson.

They are targets due to poor testing scores.

Johnson presented a five-year plan Wednesday to address the low MCAS scores at 14 so-called turnaround schools. She says the plan must be urgent and unapologetic.

Options for the schools under review include extending the school day, getting rid of the school's administration, or shutting it down altogether and replacing it with a pilot or charter school.

Fifth man charged in Mont Vernon, NH murder

(NECN: Scot Yount, Mont Vernon, NH) - Its reported that 20-year-old Autumn Savoy wept openly in court at his arraignment for charges relating to the robbery and brutal machete murder of 42-year-old Kimberly Cates in early October.

Savoy's arrest brings the total to five now charged in connection with the slaying, which included a vicious assault on Cates' 11-year-old daughter.

Peter Hinckley/assistant attorney general: "He was informed after the fact that they had committed a murder and he was asked to provide an alibi for them."

Lobbyists and the Mass. Senate race

(NECN: Alison King) - Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca says it often in TV ads and on the campaign trail: He will not take money from PACs or lobbyists.

His critics say Pagliuca, a businessman said to be worth $400 million dollars -- doesn't need to take their money.

Pagliuca says it proves he will not be influenced by them.

Steve Pagliuca may not be taking lobbyist money for his campaign, but he has no problem with paying lobbyists when they're advocating on his -- or, in Pagliuca's case, on his company's behalf.

Maersk Alabama crew fights off second pirate attack

(NECN: Brad Puffer, Bourne, Mass.) - For the second time in seven months, the Maersk Alabama has come under attack by pirates. This time the crew was better prepared.

Armed guards foiled the attack off the coast of Somalia. It's the first time a major merchant ship with guards on board has stopped an attack.

NH child dies from swine flu complications

(NECN: Latoyia Edwards, Pelham, NH) - A child in the Pelham, New Hampshire area has died from complications from the H1N1 flu. Its the state's third swine flu death.

The child had underlying health issues.

Dr. Jose Montero, the state's public health director, declined Wednesday to release the child's gender or age. Montero also said an adult from Sullivan County died from flu complications last week. In August, a 22-year-old woman died of complications from the virus.

Another arrest in Mont Vernon murder

(NECN) - New Hampshire officials say a fifth person has been arrested in connection with the death of Kimberly Cates and the assault on her daughter in their home in Mont Vernon on October 4th. 20-year-old Autumn Savoy was arrested today and charged with two counts of Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution. He is being arraigned on the charges at the Milford District Court in Milford, New Hampshire this afternoon.

Fallen soldier Spc. Sherman returns home; posthumous promotion

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Plymouth, Mass.) - A fallen Massachusetts soldier killed in Afghanistan is being remembered as a hero.

Army Specialist Benjamin Sherman was killed in Afghanistan after he went into a river to save a fellow solider, according to his family.

Wednesday morning, the body of Spc. Sherman was escorted from Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford to his native Plymouth. The Patriot Guard riders said that Spc. Sherman will be posthumously promoted to sargent and he may be posthumously awarded the bronze star.
