Quidditch club team takes off at Harvard

(NECN: Cambridge, Mass.) - A once-fictitious game has become reality, and Harvard University is among the 200 schools that feature Quidditch teams.

J.K. Rowling developed the magical game for her Harry Potter novels.

According to The Boston Herald, Harvard gave $600 for students to start a club-level Quidditch team.

Those behind the team say the game is a combination of dodge ball, soccer and track -- and is actually played with broomsticks.

N.H. panel approves Mega Millions

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire Lottery Commission has approved the sale of Mega Millions tickets.

The panel on Wednesday unanimously voted to add the multistate lottery game.

Lottery officials say in the past states could sell Powerball or Mega Millions but not both. Now states are left to decide whether to sell them both.

Officials hope to have the new game available in New Hampshire by the end of January.

The largest Mega Million jackpot was $370 million in March 2007.

Football coach pleads not guilty to assault

WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - A youth football coach charged with beating the father of one his players has pleaded not guilty.

William Reynolds was released on personal recognizance after entering his plea to a charge of aggravated assault and battery with serious injury Wednesday in Woburn District Court.

Reynolds stepped down from his coaching position with Wilmington Pop Warner after the Oct. 16 incident.

Police say the 43-year-old Reynolds made the 12-year-old boy run laps after he showed up late for practice. The boy's father,

Savoy charged with covering up Mont Vernon attack

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Nashua, N.H.) - A fifth Granite State man on Wednesday was charged in connection with the home invasion murder of a Mont Vernon mother

Autumn Savoy, 20, faces two counts of hindering apprehension or prosecution and one count of conspiracy to hinder apprehension or prosecution in Mont Vernon case.

While Savoy was arraigned in Milford District Court on one of the counts, his arraignment on the other needs to be completed in Nashua. He is accused of committing the alleged crimes in two different geographic areas.

Overhaul planned for 14 Boston schools

(NECN: John Moroney, Boston, Mass.) - More than a dozen Boston schools could be closed under a plan proposed by Superintendent Carol Johnson.

They are targets due to poor testing scores.

Johnson presented a five-year plan Wednesday to address the low MCAS scores at 14 so-called turnaround schools. She says the plan must be urgent and unapologetic.

Options for the schools under review include extending the school day, getting rid of the school's administration, or shutting it down altogether and replacing it with a pilot or charter school.

Fifth man charged in Mont Vernon, NH murder

(NECN: Scot Yount, Mont Vernon, NH) - Its reported that 20-year-old Autumn Savoy wept openly in court at his arraignment for charges relating to the robbery and brutal machete murder of 42-year-old Kimberly Cates in early October.

Savoy's arrest brings the total to five now charged in connection with the slaying, which included a vicious assault on Cates' 11-year-old daughter.

Peter Hinckley/assistant attorney general: "He was informed after the fact that they had committed a murder and he was asked to provide an alibi for them."

Two Maine firefighters face arson charges

(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Lock Mills, Maine) - Two Maine men are facing arson charges this week stemming from fires on opposite ends of the state. But the suspects have something else in common.

Early Tuesday morning, firefighters in western Maine, fought to save two houses in the small town of Lock Mills.

Hours later, 28 year old Jeffrey Tyler of Bethel was charged with arson.

Just last week, police charged 23-year-old Tim Macfarline of Easton, Maine in connection with a warehouse fire in Presque Isle that burned for 13 hours.

Mass. terrorism suspect ordered to be detained

BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts man accused in a terror plot to kill Americans should be detained in a federal jail away from other inmates while he awaits trial on terror charges because his actions have demonstrated ongoing support for terrorism and he is a flight risk, a federal judge ordered Wednesday.

Tarek Mehanna of Sudbury was arrested a year ago and charged with lying to the FBI. New, more serious charges were added last month, when Mehanna was accused of conspiring with two other men to shoot shoppers at U.S. malls and to kill two unnamed prominent U.S.
