Army suicides this year to top last year's

(NECN: Washington) - The Army is still struggling to determine the reason so many soldiers take their own lives. At a news conference at the Pentagon this morning, Army Vice Chief of Staff General Peter Chiarelli said however, they are making progress by implementing some new programs.

So far this year, 140 soldiers have committed suicide, and the new Army report estimates, that at the current rate, more soldiers will take their lives this year, than last.

Police find body of missing N.C. girl

SANFORD, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina say they have found the body of a 5-year-old girl who disappeared a week ago.

Fayetteville Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance told The Associated Press on Monday that searchers found the body of Shaniya Davis off a road southeast of Sanford in the central part of the state.

Two people have been charged in Shaniya's disappearance, including her 25-year-old mother, Antoinette Davis. Police have charged Davis with human trafficking and felony child abuse, saying

SUV crashes into prisoner intake area of jail in Spokane, WA

(NECN/KXLY: Spokane, WA) - An SUV went crashing into the prisoner intake area at the jail in Spokane, Washington Sunday.

Police got a call shortly before the crash saying 31-year-old Dustin Leeds had stole his mother's Lincoln Navigator.

Leeds then came crashing through the garage door of the prisoner intake area, colliding with a wall inside.

Leeds struggled with officers as they arrested him.

No one inside the jail was hurt in the crash.

Police say they don't know why Leeds crashed into the jail.

Prison in Thomson, IL may end up housing former prisoners of Guantanamo Bay

(NECN/WLS: Thomson, IL) - Near the Mississippi River on the northwest side of the Illinois, sits an almost empty state of the art $145 million state prison.

When Thomson prison opened 8 years ago, it promised the tiny town of Thomson, Illinois hundreds of jobs, but that never happened.

Governor Pat Quinn and Senator Dick Durbin see an opportunity to use some of the empty prison space for over 100 suspected terrorists now being held at Guantanamo Bay.

(NECN: Chicago, Ill.) - Federal officials were expected to visit the Thomson Correction Center on Monday for an inspection that could lead to the purchase of the facility.

Gov. Pat Quinn and Sen. Dick Durbin said that selling the prison in rural northwest Illinois to the federal government is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create jobs in the area.

Gitmo detainees controversy heats up

(NECN/ABC) - The Guantanamo Bay Prison has been a source of controversy almost from its inception. The debate over how to treat the detainees received more fuel from Attorney General Eric Holder.

He announced self-proclaimed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others will be tried in a civilian Federal Court, rather than at a military tribunal.

Mother of missing 5-year-old NC girl charged with human trafficking

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say the mother of a 5-year-old girl who disappeared in central North Carolina has been charged with human trafficking and other offenses.

The Fayetteville Police Department said in a news release Saturday night that the girl's mother, Antoinette Nicole Davis, also faced child abuse and filing a false police report charges, but did not say whether they were related to the girl's disappearance.

Authorities say they still do not know where Shaniya Davis is.

Fort Hood shooting victims remembered at funerals across the country

(NECN) - Across the country, people stood before several flag-draped coffins as funerals were held for six of the 13 victims of last week's shootings at Fort Hood.

In Utah, Gov. Gary Herbert and Sen. Orin Hatch crowded into a Mormon temple to join the family and friends of 19-year-old Pfc. Aaron Nemelka.

It was a similar scene in cities and towns across the country as people came out to remember those who were lost.

The Patriot Guard motorcyclists were present at many of the funerals today, escorting the troops to their final resting place.
