Health care reform advocates rally in Boston

(NECN: Latoyia Edwards, Boston, Mass.) - There was praise, not protest, on the steps of Beacon Hill today. A large crowd gathered in Boston to thank the Massachusetts congressional delegation for voting in support of a health care reform bill in Washington.

About 50 or so demonstrators put on quite show -- they had signs up, thanking the delegation.

They even staged a fake boxing match -- defeating the big insurance industry.

Maine's largest emergency room opens

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine Medical Center says work has been completed to double the size of its emergency department, which the Portland hospital calls Maine's largest and busiest.

The newly expanded emergency area opened on Thursday. Work to double the department to 49,000-square-feet began last year. The reconstructed facility has a helipad, central utility plant and parking garage. It also includes separate waiting and examination rooms for adults and children.

Maine Medical's Emergency Department treats about 170 patients

CDC: H1N1 (swine) flu has sickened 22 million in U.S.

(NECN: Washington) - Government health officials announced today that the H1N1 (swine) flu has sicked about 22 million Americans since April. They say about 4,000 people have died, including 540 children.

The new figures are about four times higher than previous death estimates.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes that about 98,000 people have been hospitalized in the first six months of the nation's swine flu epidemic, including 36,000 children.

Swine flu deaths far surpass earlier estimate

(NECN/ABC) - The H1N1 swine flu has killed more people than previously thought.

Four-thousand Americans have already died from the virus. That is more than three times an earlier estimate.

Forty-thousand have been hospitalized with the virus.

Federal officials said the death toll is higher because deaths caused by flu-related complications are being counted.

Many doctors said the best protection against this virus remains the vaccine. Problem is -- there is still a shortage.

Vermont lakes show effects of pollution

(NECN: Anya Huneke, Montpelier, VT.) - They're a source of beauty and recreation -- the lakes and reservoirs found in Vermont and across the country.

But they're also showing the effects of years of pollution, and have become sites of contamination, according to a new federal report.

This week the Environmental Protection Agency released the 'National Study of Chemical Residues in Lake Fish Tissue,' which identified toxic chemicals - predominantly mercury - in fish tested in all states in the continental U.S.

Raising awareness for 'Home Base' at Fenway Park

(NECN: Latoyia Edwards, Boston, Mass.) - Nearly one in five U.S. troops suffer from depression or stress disorders.

The Home Base Program provides support and services to veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, who return home with post traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury.

A Veterans Day ceremony was held at Fenway Park today to raise awareness for the program.
