Vermont lakes show effects of pollution

(NECN: Anya Huneke, Montpelier, VT.) - They're a source of beauty and recreation -- the lakes and reservoirs found in Vermont and across the country.

But they're also showing the effects of years of pollution, and have become sites of contamination, according to a new federal report.

This week the Environmental Protection Agency released the 'National Study of Chemical Residues in Lake Fish Tissue,' which identified toxic chemicals - predominantly mercury - in fish tested in all states in the continental U.S.

Raising awareness for 'Home Base' at Fenway Park

(NECN: Latoyia Edwards, Boston, Mass.) - Nearly one in five U.S. troops suffer from depression or stress disorders.

The Home Base Program provides support and services to veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, who return home with post traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury.

A Veterans Day ceremony was held at Fenway Park today to raise awareness for the program.

High risk groups receive H1N1 vaccine in Boston

(NECN: Scot Yount, Boston, Mass.) - A 65-year-old Boston is the city's first death this fall related to the H1N1 virus. The patient had multiple underlying health conditions.

His death is the fifth attributed to H1N1 in Boston, the 14th in Massachusetts since the spring.

Now, its getting a little easier for people to find vaccines for the H1N1 flu. The supply crunch is starting to ease.

Tonight, those at high risk got vaccinated in Boston.

NECN's Scot Yount reports from the Mattapan Community Health Center where the vaccine was distributed.

Broadside: OxyContin epidemic in Mass.

(NECN) - Massachusetts is in the grip of an epidemic worse than swine flu. Last week a shocking report shows the state needs to do a lot to step up its fight against OxyContin and Heroin.

Steve Tolman, Democratic State Senator from Brighton was on of the people who pushed hardest for the report. He joins Jim Braude on Broadside to discuss what needs to be done.

The report recommends tamperproof prescription pads, mandating drug counselors in all middle and high schools, and creating jail diversion programs to give low-level offenders the option of treatment over incarceration

People line up for Mattapan flu clinic

(NECN: Scot Yount, Boston, Mass.) - Demand for the H1N1 (swine) flu vaccine remains high, and there have been long lines at flu clinics across the country.

An H1N1 clinic is set to begin this afternoon in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood.

The Mattapan Community Health Center will hold a free swine flu vaccination clinic today from 5 to 9 p.m.

The doses are available for pregnant women, caregivers of infants, children, healthcare workers with direct patient contact and adults with chronic health problems.

The clinic is located at 1425 Blue Hill Ave.

MIT holds forum on preventing infectious diseases

(NECN: Scot Yount, Cambridge, Mass.) - The slow delivery of the H1N1 flu vaccine has been a headline story for weeks. Because of that, there's been a push to find other medicines to battle the virus.

Tonight, a special forum was held at MIT.

"Influenza virus is impossible to control and once they emerge it is impossible to predict what they will do."

Which is why vaccination is so important. The global public health concern over the H1N1 virus and the shortage of vaccine has resulted in long lines of people anxious to vaccinate themselves and their families all around the U.S.

Mass. leaders launch new fight against hunger

Hundreds of healthcare workers gathered at UMass Memorial Medical School Monday as state leaders launched the new campaign aimed at fighting hunger.

Dodd talks impact of H1N1, sick leave

Unfortunately, that's not an option for many people because they do not have enough sick days available. That could contribute to the spread of diseases, like the H1N1 (swine) flu. Today, Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd heard from advocates on the need for paid sick leave legislation.
