Manny Ramirez apologizes to fans, teammates

(NECN) - Former Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez is making his return to the big leagues tonight. Manny is set to be back in the Dodgers lineup tonight in San Diego against the Padres.

He just finished serving his 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy. apologizes

At a press conference before the game, Manny wouldn't discuss steroids, or any investigation against him. Instead he focused on how much he has missed the game.

Red Sox pitcher Dice-K's going to Florida

BOSTON (AP) - Boston right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka will be going to Florida on Monday to begin a strengthening program that the Red Sox hope will get him back to the big leagues later this season.

Matsuzaka was 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA and an opponents' batting average of .378 before going on the disabled list June 21. He's been out with a shoulder strain, and the Red Sox have said he hasn't been right since helping Japan win the World Baseball Classic.

The Japanese star was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a major league-best .211 batting average against last season.

Mass. teen to compete in U.S. Women's Open

(NECN: Jennifer Eagan) - Brittany Altomare drove, chipped, and putted her way around Cyprian Keyes golf course in Boylston Friday.

It was one of the last times the Shrewsbury teen will play at her home course before heading to the 2009 U.S. Women's Open next week.

Altomare medaled at the qualifying tournament in New Jersey in June.

“It felt really good,” Altomare said, “I was definitely thinking of my grampa because I know he would have loved to hear me say I made it.”

The 18-year-old will enter the most prestigious tournament in women's golf as one of twenty amateurs.

Federer advances to 7th Wimbledon final

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Five-time champion Roger Federer delivered a masterful grass-court performance Friday to beat Tommy Haas in straight sets and reach his seventh straight Wimbledon final, putting him within one win of a record 15th Grand Slam title.

Seeming to get stronger with every match, Federer put on a serving clinic and took advantage of his break-point chances to subdue the 31-year-old German 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-3 in just over two hours.

Federer is the first man to make it to seven consecutive Wimbledon finals in the history of a tournament that began in 1877.

Former Husky Taurasi cited for DUI

PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say leading Phoenix Mercury scorer Diana Taurasi was cited for drunken driving just a few hours after the club's win over the Seattle Storm.

Phoenix police spokesman Luis Samudio says an officer stopped Taurasi at about 2:30 Thursday morning for allegedly speeding. A police statement says the officer smelled alcohol and gave her several field sobriety tests.

Taurasi was then driven to a mobile DUI van where she gave a blood sample, then was cited and released. Authorities did not know her blood alcohol content.

(NECN) - Jason Bay is having quite a season in the walk year of his contract. The Red Sox left fielder has been an RBI machine so far, and he's currently tied for third in the American League home run race.

(NECN: Cleveland, Ohio) - Shaquille O'Neal knows how to get in good with the bosses.

During his introductory press conference as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, O'Neal said that he, at first, could not put a face to the name when GM Danny Ferry first called him.

"The other day when I got the call from Danny Ferry, I was like, 'Danny Ferry, Danny Ferry?' Then I had to check my computer to see who Danny Ferry was, and this is what came up on the internet," O'Neal said, holding up a picture of him standing above Ferry from behind.

Shaq's mission: 'Win a ring for the King'

(NECN: Cleveland, Ohio) - In his own words, Shaquille O'Neal is "very quotatious". He proved the he's still got it on Thursday during a press conference announcing him as the newest member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

When asked whether or not he planned to get involved with the local law enforcement, he failed to keep his cover.

"I'm actually undercover, so I really can't answer that," O'Neal said. "But now, my motto is very simple: Win a ring for the King."

Red Sox stage own comeback, beat Orioles 6-5 in 11

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Red Sox used a four-run ninth inning to pull even, Julio Lugo singled in the tiebreaking run in the 11th and Jonathan Papelbon became Boston's career saves leader by closing out a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.

Papelbon got three outs in the 11th for his 20th save this season and 133rd with the Red Sox, breaking the team record held by Bob Stanley. Less than 24 hours earlier, Papelbon yielded the key hit in the eighth inning of a game in which Boston blew a 10-1 lead before losing 11-10.
