(NECN) - In this down economy, many people and business find it challenging to match past donations to charities. Which is why it's somewhat unexpected that Mass High Tech honored a record number of companies for their generous giving.

Stronger dollar, weak economic data pummels stocks

NEW YORK (AP) - Signs of a subdued economic recovery sent investors out of stocks Thursday and in search of safer assets like the dollar.

Major indexes tumbled about 1 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which lost 94 points but ended well off its low. Energy and material stocks logged some of the biggest losses as a jump in the dollar sent commodity prices tumbling. Meanwhile, an analyst's downgrade of the chip industry pulled technology shares sharply lower.

(NECN: Brian Burnell) - A couple of years ago, the University of Vermont started a pilot program to certify buses for energy efficiency. They've gotten a great response from the industry and a big bus company in Connecticut is leading the way.

Has stimulus money helped to create jobs?

(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - We have been hearing a number of stories in recent days about the $700 billion federal stimulus package. Did the money help in the creation of saving or creating 640,000 jobs? Will the number go up to 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year?

There is more than a little controversy about those numbers, and even the White House admits the administration was, perhaps, too quick to take credit for the effect of the stimulus money.

BBJ: Signs of real estate progress

(NECN) - The commercial real estate market is no better off than the housing market, so any sign of progress raised new hope.
