Sen. Kennedy seeks more oil aid

(NECN) - In fierce tones, Sen. Ted Kennedy delivered a scathing message to congress and the White House over home heating fuel assistance, calling it the Senate's responsibility to assist working families who cannot afford the soaring cost of heating their homes.

As chair of the Senate's health committee, Sen. Kennedy was in Boston for a field hearing on fuel assistance. Community advocates testified that families are having to choose heat over food and medicine. NECN's Prat Thakkar has more.

Fed proposes $150 billion in aid

(NECN) - The head of the Federal Reserve Thursday recommended lawmakers pass a plan to give consumers and businesses up to $150 billion in government aid. Ben Bernanke said the Fed cutting interest rates alone which can take several months to impact borrowing, will not keep the economy from deteriorating. Democrats are favoring some form of tax relief like rebate checks.

Market update: Stocks tumble

NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks fell sharply amid concern about the direction of the economy. The more than 300 point drop for the Dow came on the same day that both the White House and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke expressed support for an economic stimulus.

Troubling signs were seen on a number of fronts, whether it was the largest-ever quarterly loss posted by Merrill Lynch or the larger than expected decline reported in December housing starts. Also today, a regional Federal Reserve report showed a sharp decline in manufacturing activity.
