GOLD & PLATINUM PLATES: NECN Review: Mills Tavern
NECN Review: Mills Tavern

From its vaulted casement ceiling, globed chandeliers and brick walls, right down to its classy table settings and wide plank wood floors Mill's Tavern in Providence, Rhode Island defines elegant design. So how does the fare live up to the showcase surroundings?

We begin with a beautifully constructed, layered Cobb salad of chopped egg, tomato, avocado and bacon further enhanced by shallot sherry vinaigrette. Delightful. Bravo also to the flavor-packed wood-fired pizza abundant with kalamata pesto, feta cheese and lamb sausage.

On to a horseradish and mustard crusted rack of lamb with goat cheese mashed potatoes. Pleasing both in appearance and flavor, the tender meaty chops ranked among the best we have ever enjoyed. A 16-ounce herb marinated veal chop with roasted red pepper salad, blue cheese stuffed olives and black truffle butter was substantial, succulent and striking in presentation.

Desserts are inspired magnificence at Mill's Tavern. The warm, spicy apple cake with ginger ice cream and walnut brittle was pure cold weather comfort food. And the raspberry mousse with chocolate sorbet and mango coulis was a work of art…and tasty, too!

Service was superlative. Our charming server Lynne was knowledgeable, gracious and efficient. Mill's Tavern is on the pricey side, with appetizers ranging from a $7.50 salad to a $44 shellfish platter; entrees from $18 to $40 and desserts landing at $8, but for a special evening out, well worth the cost.

Dining at Mill's Tavern is anything but a run-of-the-mill experience. Owner Jaime D'Oliveira and his outstanding staff have successfully achieved the perfect balance of upscale cuisine in an inviting, unpretentious environment. For its creative menu, stylish surroundings and impeccable service, Mill's Tavern will take the Platinum Plate.
