NECN Review: The Tavern from Tower SquareRustic, yet elegant with beamed ceilings, wood and brick walls and soft lighting, The Tavern from Tower Square in Plainville, Massachusetts is the sort of place where couples can enjoy a romantic meal one evening, then bring the kids in for a burger the next.
A starter of stuffed mushrooms with spinach and cheese filling was tasty, but a bit heavy on the salt. The artichoke scampi was an inspiration. Artichoke hearts sautéed in olive oil, garlic and white wine, then finished in a buttery scampi sauce served over grilled sourdough toast was savory in flavor and significant in portion.
On to a robust plate of chicken Englaise, charbroiled chicken rubbed in Dijon mustard served over angel hair pasta enveloped in a garlic, lemon, marsala wine and butter sauce. Intense in flavor, this rich dish was enough for two to share. That salt shaker also hit the stuffed boneless pork chops a little too hard. But otherwise, the two half-pound broiled chops with sausage and vegetable stuffing was satisfying and sizeable.
Slices of Cortland apples baked in a sour cream batter with walnut and cinnamon topping made for a delightful apple strudel pie. Topped by vanilla ice cream, this was one sweet ending we happily spooned our way through. And the mud pie with its layers of chocolate and coffee ice cream encased in a cookie crust and drizzled with chocolate sauce was pure cold comfort.
Value is excellent at The Tavern from Tower Square with appetizers about $7; sandwiches, burgers, salads and large plates from $7 to $17 and desserts about $5. Service was efficient and friendly…and we should also mention that on most evenings the stylings of a piano player are featured in the restaurant's bar room.
For its comfortable atmosphere, diverse menu, and incredible value, The Tavern from Tower Square will earn the Gold Plate.
