Two of New England's favorite pro football players --- Fred Smerlas and Steve DeOssie --- have opened a handsome steakhouse at Twin River in Lincoln, Rhode Island, a safe bet if you're seeking the ultimate steakhouse experience.
With a spectacular view of the gaming action at Twin River, Fred & Steve's Steakhouse has a supercharged masculine atmosphere with its rich, dark brown tones and truly humungous chairs that even the biggest linebacker will find roomy.
With Fred and Steve's football jerseys hanging on the walls, the restaurant is split in two parts --- a sophisticated bar and lounge, and then the stylish dining room.
You'll be livin' large when you order the Coastal Oyster Selection, a half dozen perfectly chilled oysters on the half shell that are plump and meaty. The Tailgate Salad could almost feed a crowd with plenty of fresh greens livened up with hard-boiled eggs and Nicoise olives.
Next you just might want to tackle one of the champion steaks on the menu. The Porterhouse is a perfect marriage of filet mignon and strip steak. The old-fashioned Prime Rib really does melt in your mouth! Side dishes cost extra but are worth it, especially the Creamed Corn with Pancetta and the zesty Fingerling Potatoes. Nothing ordinary here. It's more like extraordinary!
Desserts are just as hearty. A generous wedge of the Bananas Foster Cheesecake was a touchdown in our playbook, and the Flourless Chocolate Cake with a Cabernet Sauvignon Raspberry Sauce was the point after!
On our recent visit, everything was just terrific until the fourth quarter when it seemed as if the wait staff forgot that we were there. Outside of that fumble, the team at Fred & Steve's did everything right, and that wins them the Gold Plate.
Appetizers and salads are in the $8 to $13 price range. Entrees average between $27 and $38. Desserts run from $6 to $8. You don't have to be a high roller to dine here, but it does help!
