Review: On The Marsh

(TV Diner) - On The Marsh in Kennebunk, Maine, was voted one of Maine's Top Ten Restaurants, and has earned the Wine Spectator Award for excellence.

But, the real question is whether or not they can pass the TV Diner test!

With its thick grapevine arbor, beautiful gardens and shade of warm lavender on an old farmhouse and barn, On the Marsh in Kennebunk, Maine affected an immediate welcome. Antiques, art and collectibles enhanced a stunning décor on all levels of the restaurant from the spacious loft to the dining room that gave a great view of the tidal salt marsh.

The menu was somewhat limited, but the selections were fascinating.

We opened with a House-Made Truffle Gnocchi.

Tiny mushrooms and micro vegetables floated within and around tender gnocchi in a clear clean mushroom consume that bridged the essences of every little (literally!!!!) ingredient for a sensational start.

Exotic cheese melted and slipped over the edge of the sourdough crouton topping the Mushroom and Onion Soup that was thick with local organic ingredients for a robust and outstanding dish.

The House-Made Wild Mushroom Linguini mingled sweet peas and onions with the smoke and earth of crinkly Morel mushrooms and thin ribbons of delicate pasta. Offset with shavings of sharp Parmesan Reggiano, it was a brilliant balance of flavors.

Sitting in its own seared juices, the Pan-Roasted Free Range Chicken was absolutely poultry at its finest served with fresh corn and braised Napa cabbage.

Redolent with cinnamon and nutmeg, the Apple Bolen baked the fruit in an envelope of puff pastry warm enough to relax the pure vanilla bean ice cream--all on swirls of caramel sauce.

We shamelessly scraped the plate.

Seduction by Chocolate tripled degrees of chocolate with an eight layer dark torte, a pistachio-coated milk chocolate truffle and a refreshing white chocolate-orange essence ---pure culinary eloquence.

Service was outstanding. Prices were phenomenal with averages in appetizers seven dollars, entrees twenty-three dollars and desserts eight dollars.

On the Marsh is a dichotomy of quaint country and European dining elegance with total refinement of beautifully crafted quality fare and exemplary service wrapped in a romantic ambiance.

This award-winning restaurant is a classic and earns the Platinum Plate.
