Review: Bon Appétit

(TV Diner) - During the day, Bon Appétit South in Pembroke, MA serves as a casual breakfast joint called The Omelet Factory, then at night, the distinguished Chef Marco transforms the Omelet Factory, into a fine-dining restaurant, serving French and American inspired cuisine.

If it had an astrological sign, Bon Appetit South in Pembroke, Massachusetts would surely be a Gemini.

Serving up breakfast and lunch as The Omelet Factory by day, then transitioning into a casual yet elegant fine dining establishment in the evening, this beauty of a bistro also has a dual personality menu of French and American cuisine.

We began with a generous bowl of caramelized onion soup, which was a flavorful tour de force rich in veal stock, sherry and herbs. We also sampled a cheese and fruit plate. Ample cuts of brie and other French cheeses, sided by berries, grapes and chunks of crusty bread, proved heavenly.

On to a beef bourguignon crepe, sitting next to a lovely salad of mixed greens, goat cheese and walnuts. The thin French pancake served as culinary gift wrap, for its filling of tender beef and pearl onions.

We will say, the bourguinon sauce was a little on the salty side for our taste. Then the pork tenderloin, with wild boar chop, was a masterpiece, in both flavor and presentation. Paired with petit vegetables, fingerling potatoes, in a puff pastry cup and a rhubarb and onion confit, this bountiful offering was café fare at its finest!

The dessert menu is presented in a picture frame at Bon Appetit South - quite appropriate as our meal finales were pretty as a picture. A pear tartlet was pure pleasure, with its shortbread base, custard filling and sliced and spiced fruit topping.

And we had to say "oui" to a crepe au chocolat. The thin crepe filled with ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce and cream was bliss.

Our charming and professional server added to the pleasant experience, as did a brief chat with Bon Appetit South owner Phil Fitzpatrick, who took the time to visit each table. Value is quite good, with appetizers around $10; entrees from $19 to $28 and desserts averaging $7.

For its high-quality and predominantly local, organic ingredients, remarkable presentation, comfortable yet stylish setting and reliable service Bon Appetit South will earn a solid Gold Plate.
