Review: Chinese Laundry

(TV Diner) - Well, it's finally time for us to come clean! The newest and perhaps the finest restaurant in Providence, Rhode Island, is the incredible Chinese Laundry.

It may be small, but you can't miss this place with its bright red façade. Inside it's a very hip meeting place with only eight seats at the bar and 14 seats in the dining room. That dining room has a glass floor --- yes, a glass floor --- that gives you a view of the VIP dining room down below with its own private entrance. Upstairs is an ultra lounge that comes alive late at night. There is but one word for the Chinese Laundry, and that is titillating. You'll just have to go to see why!

When you do go, bring lots of money for this is one of the most expensive restaurants around. The Pan-Asian menu offers incredible Forbidden Nigiri priced at $8 and up per bite. Yes, per bite! Just the Crisp Wasabi Kumamoto Oysters, with a hint of lemongrass, made the trip to Providence totally worthwhile. There are only five entrees on the menu, but they are phenomenal. If money is no object, try the Kobe (pronounced KO-BAY) Tenderloin Hibachi Grill.

That will set you back 50 bucks for a mere two ounces of the best beef in the world. In contrast, the Braised Prime Short Rib is huge and also melts in your mouth. The Mahogany Glazed Tasmanian Salmon is sweet and tender. On the side, we recommend the Alaskan Crab Pad Thai, which is loaded with real crabmeat, and the delicate Tempura Vegetables.

The Chinese Laundry does not serve dessert, but we didn't need it. Our senses were still reeling from the exotic flavors we enjoyed during dinner. You will be warmly greeted by a very attractive staff, and they will guide you through every part of your dining experience at the Chinese Laundry.

The sashimi and nigiri appetizers start at $3 per piece. Entrees range from $27 to $100, with side dishes costing extra. If we could, we'd give this place a Platinum Plate encrusted with diamonds.

It's just the ticket! Located at 121 North Main Street in Providence, Rhode Island, the wonderfully outrageous Chinese Laundry opens for dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
