(TV Diner) - It's no wonder Christo's Restaurant is home to the "Greek salad king." This restaurant has been known to serve anywhere between 500 to 12,000 Greek salads a week!
A Brockton, Massachusetts landmark since 1964, Christo's, with its casually outfitted dining rooms, 40-foot bar and a menu offering Greek and American standards - is reminiscent of an era when it didn't cost an arm and a leg.
We decided to sample several "signature" dishes. First up the Greek salad, a marvelous mix of greens, vegetables, cured olives and feta. Tossed with homemade dressing, there's no wonder why this salad keeps the crowds at Christo's coming back for more.
We heard that pizza is king here, so we chose an olive and pepper pie as an appetizer. Word to the wise - if you order pizza at Christo's on a Saturday night, you'll wait for it. In fact, ours arrived after the entrees. Points off for that snafu, but once delivered the savory slices were too good to resist. And our salt-of-the-earth waitress insisted that the pie was on the house.
Back track to those entrees. The baked lamb Greek style has been a menu mainstay at Christo's for more than 40 years and with reason. Braised in tomato sauce, there was nothing meek about the two velvety shanks.
The roast rump of beef, while not as notable as the lamb, was another appetite pleaser. Thin slices of slow roasted seasoned beef au jus served with a choice of sides was a fine meal, indeed.
Our sweet tooth opted for the homemade baklava. The traditional Greek pastry of spiced ground nuts encased in layers of phyllo and dripping with honey was nice, but not exceptional. A wedge of apple pie a la mode was nothing out of the ordinary, but at less than three bucks, the price was right.
Speaking of prices, they are on the money at Christo's with appetizers, salads and pizzas about $6, sandwiches and entrees from $4 to $17 and desserts a mere $2.50 average. And service is down home and efficient, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience.
That said, Christo's will earn the Gold Plate.
