Review: Dante's

(TV Diner) - Dante's Pasta and Vino serves up freshly made Italian meals that will have your mouth watering! As a plus, this popular restaurant is a great place to hold special functions and events.

Grape vines covered the railings to the entrance of Dante's Pasta and Vino in Barrington, New Hampshire. With choices including the dining room, outdoor patio or lounge, we decided on the small bar area , where interesting wine bottles lined the walls and shelves.

The Italian menu was extensive.

The Polenta Fritta was a good start , with two deep fried polenta rounds filled with mozzarella and topped with prosciutto , on a generous complement of top-notch marinara.

The Bruschetta plate circled several pieces of grilled Italian toast around a chopped tomato topping , that was tasty, but skimpy in serving size.

Our first entrée of Aslio, Olio and Peperoncino, tossed chunks of plum tomatoes garlic, herbs and red pepper together with too much olive oil for flavor and texture. The Ciapo was the low point, served with a tasteless shell fish and an unappealing piece of gray tinted salmon, over a flavorless broth that ruined the homemade linguini on the bottom of the bowl. Oy.

For dessert, although the shells were too hard, the chocolate chip cannolis had a decent filling that made for an overall tasty dessert. The Triple Chocolate Truffle nicely combined velvety and solid textures that were creamy except for the very dry edge of the slice.

Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly, but quite inattentive. Prices were mixed in value with the appetizers good in size and quality averaging $6 to $15, the entrees not so good from $8 to $25 and the desserts an "okay" value at $7 to $8. Allegedly modeled after a spaghetti house in Italy, Dante's hit or miss menu is extensive in selection but not quality.
